The New Society

Marcos declared the " New Society" as the centerpiece of his administration upon his declaration of Martial Law. He believed that for socio economic reforms to take place, a positive image of the country. Marcos implemented the dismissal service of corrupt and abusive government officials. The government built specialized hospitals. Human rights violations was the most serious abuse of martial law. Marcos's political oppoments suffered the most. Even the members of the Constitutional Convention (CONCON) who opposed his adminstration were imprisoned together with his political opponments they were, harassed, tortured, raped, or killed inside the prison. Cronyism was commited by the Marcos Administration. It means the act of given favors to relatives, friends or allies to advance their business or political interests. One anomalous deal that involved Marcos and his cronies was the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant in which a large amount of money was borrowed from a foreign lending institutions. But the BNPP was not operated at alll after all it was found out that it was located along an Earthquake fault. The Marcoses were accused of having pocketed around $5-10 billion in stolen wealth. The former first lady Imelda Marcos gained noteriety for having 3,000 pairs of shoes; The country was faced with a serious economic cricis, the means used by Marcos to supposedly bring peace and order to the Philippine society served as the same reason for the worsening peace and order. The government had an imposition of monopoly on coconut and sugar. Landless-ness peristed, Illegal squatters continued, unemployment gave rise. The peace and order situation also did not improve because of the CPP-NPA which continued to wage a communist rebellion. The excesses of martial law sowed discontent among the affected sectors of the society. Students organized and mobilized themselves themselves to express their disgust of the government. The imposition of martial law made life difficult for many Filipinos.
