Restoration of Democracy

Several events led to the end of Marcos's presidency and the restoration of democracy. Benigno Aquino Jr. was assasinated on August 21 1983, his death became a signal of the Filipino's struggle against the Marcos rule. His death triggered massive protests against Marcos, this forced Marcos called for a snap election. Marcos declared the holding of a presidential election in 1981. Marcos won for the third time. Marcos called his new term as the New Republic. Ninoy Aquino was a senator when the martial law was declared, he was a vocal critic against Marcos so he was put to jail, his health deteriorated so they allowed him to stay in the US but then he decided to return in to the Philippines, even if he got a warning that his life was in danger. On Febuary 22, 1986, National Defense Minister Enrile and the rebel soldiers affiliated with the Reform the Armed Forces Movement, withdrew their support from the Marcos administration and pledged their support to President Corazon C. Aquino. Half a million to one million marched to EDSA to show their support to the rebel troop. The People's voices won and this was the People Power 1 Revolution.
